Student athletes will be honored with banquet

On April 24, Jones County Junior College will hold a banquet to recognize student athletes. The banquet will be a celebration of winning records across all spring sports. The Lady Bobcats are still going strong with a current record of 35-1. Both basketball teams finished the season by setting new school records with the women finishing 30-2 and men finishing 29-2. The baseball team is striving for another national title with a current record of 31-1. Women’s and men’s tennis are fighting to finish top three in the state with the women’s current record of 8-5 and men’s record 7-6.

Additionally, the athletic department will give awards to individuals based on extraordinary performance in athletics and/or academics. So far many athletes have received athletic honors outside of JCJC. Sophomores, Brittany Baty and Kelly Byrd, were each named Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges player of the week for softball. Freshmen women’s basketball players K.K. Tassih was named MACJC player of the week once and Alexis Tolefree twice. Men’s basketball sophomore, Tristin Walley, received the honor of MACJC player of the week as well as sophomore Bruce Stevens who earned the honor four times. In baseball, sophomores Shelton Wallace and Erick Hoard were each named player of the week for MACJC. Additionally, sophomores Logan Robbins and Fred Franklin were both named NJCAA Division 2 and MACJC players of the week.
